Nailing nutrition at major tournaments

In this episode of Fast Fuel our host Dr James Morehen is joined by Mike Naylor as he discusses how he goes about preparing for and delivering top level sports nutrition support at major tournaments. Mike shares that it is much more about the logistics, planning and managing challenges, than it is about the science of nutrition. Mike is a leading health and performance nutritionist with over 15 years’ experience in elite sport, including having held roles such as the Head of Performance Nutrition at the English Institute of Sport

  • Project planning and prioritization are key. Consider the event logistics and  how you can really make a difference on the ground to support athletes in the tournament environment.
  • Be prepared to be adaptable and have contigency plans in place so that you can adapt to changing event conditions. 
  • Remember that athletes are humans too and so it's important build rapport and think about the timing of your messages.
  • Building a community and support network with other key stakeholders at the event to ensure you can deliver the best support to the athletes.
